How do you spend your day? What EXACTLY do you do – and how long does it take?

Can’t answer?

That’s often the case!

Here’s the thing. At the risk of sounding like and old person, I think in the ‘olden days’ – (ok maybe not the olden days, but let’s just say 10-20 years ago) – knowing what you did with your time was more achievable than it is now.

Let’s just think. Before you could spend inordinate amounts of time watching cat videos on Youtube, orĀ mindlessly scrolling through your Facebook feed – what did you do?

Let me guess. You did the stuff you’d planned to do! Less distractions. Less ‘shiny objects’ to draw your focus away from the task at hand.

Honestly, I do it myself sometimes. I’d be watching TV but scrolling through Facebook at the same time ‘just in case I missed out on something!’. I’ll be doing my work, yet hear a ‘ding’ on my phone and straight away switch focus. I’ll be meant to be preparing healthy food but find myself online Googling recipes instead. I’ll be meant to be at the gym but find myself on a Facebook fitness page looking at inspirational pictures.

See what I mean? Instead of ‘doing’, you’re distracted, Lose your focus and you lose sight of your goals

So how do you sort it out?

  • Be super conscious of how you’re spending every minute.
  • Take notes detailing what you’re doing, and when.
  • Document and diarise.
  • Find apps that can block you out from certain websites for a self-specified period of time.
  • Switch off phone/email/computer notifications.
  • Schedule ‘me’ time and let others know when you shouldn’t be disturbed.
  • Learn how to say no.
  • Use the Pomodoro technique.

Just to name a few!

Really be conscious of what you’re doing and how you’re spending your time. If you’re an anal retentive nerd like me, you can even download my time tracker. I give this to my clients and have them fill it out for a whole week, just so they can see exactly where their time is going. It’s an eye opener to say the least. Then – once you’ve been ‘super conscious’ for a few weeks – fill it out again and look at the differences……

I’d love to hear how you mange your time and your distractions. Drop me a line in the comments below!
